Dr. Dre – Compton

dre

Now, obviously we all wanted the” Chronic,” but we all realistically knew we weren’t getting that, right? This album had to grow on me. I had to get over that hump. I wanted it to be more “West Coasty.” As I kept playing the album and shuffling through the songs in different orders, I can’t deny how dope this album is. The production is different than what I expected but definitely dope. It was good to hear Xzibit to body the “Loose Cannons” joint.  That song gave me that 90’s feel when it switched up for X. This could probably be lower on the list but I’m gauging this on what I listened to the most, and what I have memorized the most. For me, that’s the only logical way to determine how much I liked an album.  Check ” Loose Cannons” here —> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGtJOxZOwlI

Young Jeezy – Church In These Streets

jeezy1

Sorry hip hop enthusiasts, but Jeezy is that work! I took to Twitter earlier today how there is a definite importance in lyrics but sometimes the more basic, simpler writers make the better albums. Jeezy is a perfect example of that. Album after album Jeezy finds a way to keep it fresh and dope. He’s got several hits which appeal to most people who enjoy hip hop. I particularly like this album because he went more personal and dabbled with the pen a bit more than usual. This dropped at a good time for me and kept me entertained. Go grab this. He’s got an ill joint with Monica you can check here —> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZbco41ZXmE&feature=youtu.be

Rick Ross –  Black Market

rozay

Performing live at Prudential Center on Sunday, April 10 at 8pm | Buy Tickets

Not sure why Ross is so underrated and I’m sure I’ll catch hell for even acknowledging him but I’m a huge Ross fan. There’s really no project/mixtape I haven’t enjoyed. What stands out for me on this album is that he steered away from the party shit a bit and focused more on darker production — and a lot more on word play — respectfully, lacing a joint featuring DJ Premier (“Black Opium“). He’s a hip hop head if you hip hop heads paid more attention. There’s a banger with Nas, John Legend and CeeLo Green. Steady rotation right here. If you’re sleeping — go grab this. Rozaaaaaaaaaaaaay…

Sean Price –  Songs In The Key of Price

RUCK001

First and foremost, rest in peace to my good brother, Sean. Sadly, he passed away in 2015, and even harder for me because he passed on my birthday. Hit me like a ton of bricks. Always praying for the well being of his family who are beautiful people. And as usual he left us with something special. P is/was a monster. His rhymes and presence were unmatched. Rhymes for him just come natural. I’ve sat and watched him through his process of recording and he’s just one with a beat, mic, booth, whatever. It’s what was meant for him. He shows that on this album and every project he’s ever released. RIP SEAN  check out “Planet Apes” here —> https://youtu.be/VjFNr2rl-Qk

Freddie Gibbs –  Shadow of a Doubt

Freddie_Gibbs_Shadow_of_a_Doubt

I get a lot of mixed opinions with Freddie. I personally really bang with Freddie’s work. If it’s the accent you can’t deal with then whatever but you can’t deny Gibbs can spit. He’s a clever dude. I find myself grooving to this album and just zoning out. Same way with his previous album, “Pinata.” Beats and Rhymes. Not much more I can say. Here’s “Extradite” with Philly’s own Black Thought https://youtu.be/JUeB1w7JDUM

Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp a Butterfly

kl

Now, people have to relax. I’ve seen this album said to be this era’s Illmatic. CHILLLLLLLL! This album grew on me. I wasn’t expecting it to be done the way it was, but I’ve put this album at my attention to do this and understand why and what people love. It’s the same as before with “GKMC.” He’s a super talent. He’s what the game needed. I just wasn’t blown away at first. The production throws me off at times, and I’ve never been big on the P-funk/hip hop connection. All in all though K-Dot knows what he’s doing. He’s an incredible emcee and finds a way to make great albums. One thing that won me over is his hooks. I’m big on hooks. He’s really good at them and brings songs to life with them. Not necessarily AOTY but a dope album nonetheless. Check out “The Blacker the Berry” here —> https://youtu.be/rMxNYQ71LOk

Dave East – Hate Me Now

daveeat-hatemenow

Performing live at The Studio at Webster Hall on Wednesday, February 10 at 8pm | Buy Tickets

EAST COAST STAND UP!!! There’s a new sheriff in town! Dave East. This album is NYC Boom-Bap all day. Love this shit. Co-signed by Nas, and for good reason. This kid got it: Bars, charisma, the whole nine. He’s gotta joint on here called “No Coachella for Me” that blew me away. i caught onto it late, so it should possibly be lower in this list but to my standards of the list I have to post it now. Please go grab this. These are the kind of guys we need to make a stamp in the game. Hopefully Nas gotta good game plan for him. Check “No Coachella for Me” here —>https://youtu.be/sMZ856g-8PA

Cambatta – Smoke & Mirrors 2: The Crack Baby

Cambatta_Smoke_Mirrors_2_The_Crack_Baby-front-large

GET FAMILIAR. Another East Coast representer, originally out of Connecticut and now living in NYC. This dude is a complete monster. He reminds me of Black Thought meets Killah Priest. This dude’s pen game is unbelievable, Gladly, he will be on our new album and y’all have to wait for that but we’re excited. Please support this man and brace yourself before you hit this link —-> https://youtu.be/u4ScFJKEgjI

Joe Budden –  All Love Lost

budden

Performing live at SOB’s on Tuesday, February 2 at 8pm | Buy Tickets

To those who know me well they know Joe Budden is one of my least favorite people on the planet (chuckles). I can’t front though, this album is superb. It falls into the same category of a rapper giving you 150% of their truths and doing it in song form and making it bang! I still can’t stand the guy but I’m thankful for this album. It’s good to know hip hop still allows substance to stay in the loop. Go grab this, I hardly see any one talk about it, it’s being slept on. Check out “Man Down” —> https://youtu.be/vWPY6o_xc30
