Now That MMA Is Legal In New York State, UFC 205 Is Scheduled at MSG

April 14, 2016

UFC’s Lorenzo Fertitta announced this week that UFC 205 will take place at Madison Square Garden on November 12.
MMA stock image-jpgGovernor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill, which passed the New York State Assembly on March 22, legalizing mixed martial arts. Now that the bill is signed, the New York State Athletic Commission will soon set rules and regulations before matches can be officially scheduled.

According to UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, the company is committed to four events in the state over the next couple of years, so expect a card to take place somewhere like Rochester or Albany, N.Y. as well as this highly anticipated November 12 date. It’s early to play matchmaker, but Fertitta also acknowledged UFC’s biggest stars like Rhonda Rousey could be a potential headliner. Regardless, he guaranteed a “major” card with a title fight included.

While this sport was not permitted in the state, big UFC fights would take place at Prudential Center in New Jersey to take advantage of the New York media market. The arena in Newark, N.J. has hosted at least 7 cards, including most recently the Anthony Johnson vs. Ryan Bader UFC Fight Night event this past January.
