Dahday's Picks For Labor Day Weekend Music

August 26, 2014

You may not go to the beach or cook on the grill the entire weekend, right? So if you are looking for a fantastic live event to enjoy, here are some ideas.

New York City | New Jersey | Philadelphia

New York City:

August 28 – September 1: 47th Annual Carnival 2014 at 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, N.Y., 11238 | Buy Tickets
A Brooklyn institution, all island nations represented in the borough celebrate Caribbean culture, music and love throughout the weekend. The parade tops things off on Monday, preceded by concerts for your various Caribbean music tastes, from a soca jam featuring Machel Montano HD, Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy and others on Friday night to Mighty Sparrow, Lord Nelson and David Rudder on Sunday night. This weekend makes people do this:

Friday, August 29 at 8pm: La Salsa Vive featuring Gilberto Santa Rosa at Madison Square Garden, New York, N.Y. | Buy Tickets
In tribute to the late Cheo Feliciano, Gilberto Santa Rosa headlines a cast of salsa’s living legends like Jose Alberto, Oscar D’Leon, Tito Nieves and La India. Expect to hear Feliciano’s greatest hits interpreted by these soneros.

New Jersey:

Friday, August 29 at 9pm: Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue at Borgata Casino, Atlantic City, N.Y. | Buy Tickets
A trombonist since age 4, this talented musician and singer powers a show with that brass-filled NOLA funk and soul, entertaining audiences throughout the world. Get a feel of his band here:

If you are headed to the shore this weekend closer to the AC Expressway, this would be a dope stop for your Friday night.

Saturday, August 30 at 8pm: Prince Royce at Revel Casino, Atlantic City, N.J. | Buy Tickets
Bachata is in many ways the mainstream pop music of Latino America, the same way country music or hip hop is becoming the genres dominating Top 40 radio and download sales. This Bronx, N.Y. native is one of bachata’s biggest stars. Royce will croon in a casino soon to close. You have a chance to enjoy one last scream-filled show this Saturday night.

Sunday, August 31 at 8pm: Fantasia at Wellmont Theater, Montclair, N.J. | Buy Tickets
Here is another chance to check out Fantasia in New Jersey, this time in Montclair, a cool suburban town with a foodie’s taste. Wellmont Theater is walking distance from scores of restaurants from delicious, high-demand spots like Cuban Pete’s, Pig & Prince and Costanera to more informal comfort-food joints like The Wood Pit BBQ and Tuptim Thai Cuisine. If you are looking for dinner and a show this holiday weekend, this would work.

Philadelphia:

Saturday and Sunday, August 30-31 at 12 noon: Budweiser Made In America at Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA | Buy Tickets

Philly’s biggest concert of the year. Kanye, J. Cole, Mayer Hawthorne among others on Saturday night. Pharrell Williams, Tiesto, YG and others on Sunday night. Thousands upon thousands of people on The Parkway. Enough said.

Saturday, August 30 at 8pm: The Summer Breeze Tour featuring Isley Brothers, Atlantic Starr and El Debarge at Dell Music Center, Philadelphia, PA | Buy Tickets

This show was made for an R&B ballad lover looking to enjoy the last days of summer with that special someone. This tour aptly stops in Philly at the Dell Music Center, a newly renovated outdoor amphitheater in the eastern part of Fairmount Park. Enjoy a half-century’s worth of hits from the Isley Brothers. Plus, if you are an 1980s R&B fan, this show is a rare opportunity to see Atlantic Starr and El Debarge live! Those artists don’t come around too often.

Click here for two Atlantic City ideas listed above. Trombone Shorty also performs at TLA on Saturday night with Charles Bradley.
