Dahday’s Picks For July 4th Weekend Live Events

June 29, 2015

Nothing personifies the fun and sun of the summer more than July 4th weekend.

Some fire up the grill. Others head to the beach. But how about catching a live event? Here are some fun some things to do this week:

Baseball and Fireworks!
Collage baseball_edited-1For sports fans looking to check out a ballgame, you have the treat of having lots of choices. Both New York MLB teams are in town this week, with the New York Mets hosting the exciting Chicago Cubs June 30-July 2 and the Yankees playing a key series against the first place Tampa Rays July 3-5.

In Philadelphia, the birthplace of Independence, the Phillies host post-game fireworks shows after the July 1st and July 2nd games against the Milwaukee Brewers.

If you want to enjoy baseball for less, the minor league Brooklyn Cyclones, Long Island Ducks, Staten Island Yankees and Trenton Thunder all host post-game fireworks shows this weekend.

We Want The Funk!
If music is more what you are looking for, here is a funky suggestion: head out to Governor’s Island on July 3rd and enjoy George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. This “Funk N’ Cue” also includes a chance to eat and drink to the sounds of The Mothership.

Welcome America!
Every July 4th weekend, Philly hosts a free concert featuring chart-topping artists backed by the legendary Roots crew. This year, R&B star Miguel headlines the annual Welcome America! celebration on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The show is absolutely free. Just head down early for your best possible spot to see the show.

African Arts Festival in Brooklyn!
Head to Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn and for just a $5 donation enjoy a celebration of Black music. The International African Arts Festival features artists like salsera Cita Rodriguez, rapper Talib Kweli, R&B legend Normon Connors, rockers Living Colour and world music artist Kaïssa.

Dance The Night Away!

If dancing under the stars is your thing, check out Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing. This week you can either dance some Mambo, jam out to traditional New Orleans Jazz or soak in the sounds of Motown. There is admission to get on the dance floor near the stage but nothing stops you from enjoying the music in the plaza just outside the dance floor gates.
