Dahday’s Picks For Best Super Bowl Music Moments

February 6, 2016

Super Bowl 50 takes places February 7. Football fans are gearing up for a Cam Newton vs. Peyton Manning matchup. The not-so-big football fans on the other hand are looking forward to this year’s TV commercials and Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars performing live.

The NFL’s Big Game has come a long way since the University of Arizona and Grambling State marching bands were the halftime entertainment in Super Bowl I. Since 1991, superstar performers have taken over halftime. Here are Dahday’s picks for dopest live performances since the “Modern Era:”

A Sal-soulful Super Bowl XXXIII (1999)

The 1999 Super Bowl in Miami, Florida featured John Elway’s Denver Broncos seeking to repeat against Jamal Anderson‘s dirty bird Atlanta Falcons. With a 17-6 halftime score, probably the halftime show was the most entertaining part of the evening. Anytime you can enjoy Stevie Wonder belt out his biggest hits it’s a great time. On top of that, Gloria Estefan and her Miami Sound Machine brought that Latino Caribbean flavor to the show.

A Lights Out Super Bowl Show (2013)

Remember when a power outage turned the lights out in the New Orleans Superdome during the game? You may also recall the Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers matchup was a good one. The Ravens were up as much as 22 points, but seemingly after the outage, Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers came roaring back, cutting the lead to just two point before Baltimore held them off to win.

Thankfully the lights stayed on long enough for Beyoncé and her ladies from Destiny’s Child to bring the house down.

A Halftime Show Treasure (2014)

The Denver Broncos may have lost big, but Bruno Mars won big at Super Bowl XLVIII. As fans were suffering through a dismal, blowout game as Russel Wilson’s Seattle Seahawks dominated from the start, the Mars took full advantage of his time on the MetLife Stadium stage. His awesome performance featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers propelled a huge jump in downloads and a big push for his concert tour ticket sales, which went on sale the following day.

Janet and Justin’s Super Bowl Moment (2007)

We all remember the infamous nipple slip controversy with this halftime show, but don’t forget P. Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock rocked the stage before the wardrobe malfunction took place. By the way, the New England Patriots held off the Carolina Panthers 32-29 in an entertaining game.

Whitney’s Gift To America (1991)

Americans enjoyed a great diversion from the Persian Gulf War during Super Bowl XXV. On the field, the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills gave fans maybe the best played Super Bowl in NFL history. Before the game even began, Newark, N.J. native Whitney Houston sang an emotional rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Just as the football game is so historic, Whitney’s rendition of the National Anthem may be the greatest ever produced.

The King of Halftime Shows (1993)

Simply put, Super Bowl Halftime show performances became a big deal after this Michael Jackson performance. As fans took in a big Dallas Cowboys lead over the Buffalo Bills, they enjoyed this Super Bowl’s most memorable moment watching The King of Pop do what he did best.
