Dahday’s Five Favorite Live Clips Of Phife Dawg From A Tribe Called Quest

March 23, 2016

Classic hip hop fans had a tough morning on March 23.

Phife Dawg, a key member of the legendary hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, passed away after years of battling Type-I diabetes. He was just 45 years old.

In celebration of his all-too-brief but dope hip hop career, here are Dahday’s five favorite live clips.

A Tribe Called Quest produced some of the most critically acclaimed albums in the history of the genre. Its first album, People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths of Rhythms, included the classic “Can I Kick It?” Here is Phife rockin’ the stage with band mate Q-Tip performing at The Apollo Theater:

In the fall of 1991, Tribe released The Low End Theory, which received a 5 mics rating from The Source Magazine, among other accolades. This is a live performance on Yo MTV Raps of “Check The Rhime.” “You on point, Phife? All the time, Tip…”

Another classic from this album, “Scenario,” featured Leaders Of The New School members, including Busta Rhymes. Can’t help but get hyped from this track, which led off with Phife. Remember this performance on The Arsenio Hall Show?

By 1993, Tribe released “Midnight Marauders,” which included the classic “Electric Relaxation.” Phife is on stage here as part of a reunion performance at Rock The Bells in 2010. Y’all know this one – “I Like ’em brown, yellow, Puerto Rican and Haitian…”

As Tribe fans know, beef developed in the group and against the label, which drew them to break up after The Love Movement album was released in 1999. Phife rarely performed for some time but within the last several years, he would reunite with Q-Tip and the rest for shows, like that Rock The Bells show in 2008.

Just months ago, Phife made a solo appearance in Canada at a Toronto Raptors game. Phife drops a medley of all his best songs. Check it out:
