Dahday’s Picks For Dope Boxing Events Coming Up Soon

February 23, 2016

Verdejo pic with PR flagFans of the Sweet Science, you don’t have to take a flight to Las Vegas to see some good rumbles.

In this corner of the country, there are some quality matchups coming up soon. Get your tickets to one of these fights happening in this month and in March:

Friday, February 19 at 7:15pm: Adam “Mantequilla” Lopez cs. Mario “Yayo” Muños: Shobox: The New Generation at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, N.J. | Buy Tickets

Lopez (14-0, 7 KOs) will clash Muños (16-0-1, 10 KOs) in a 10-round super bantamweight fight. Lopez, who lives in San Antonio, is facing a fighter in Muños who is boxing for the first time outside of Mexico. Both had strong amateur backgrounds and have similar knockout track records so this could be an evenly-matched fight. Also, Philadelphia welterweight Keenan Smith, (9-0, 3 KOs), will face Wellington Romero (9-0-1, 4 KOs) in an 8-round bout.

Saturday, February 27 at 6:30pm: World Championship Boxing – Crawford vs. Lundy and Verdejo vs. Silva at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York, N.Y. | Buy Tickets

This presents a great double-header featuring Crawford, a pound-for-pound top 10 boxer and Verdejo, the next Puerto Rican boxing superstar. Crawford will put his WBO Jr. Welterweight title on the line against Philly’s “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy. Crawford is a Omaha, Nebraska native who is fighting for the first time at the World’s Most Famous Arena. Lundy is a former NABO and NABF champion whose road-warrior, feisty background may push the favorite Crawford on this big stage.

Verdejo (19-0, 14 KOS), the rising 22-year-old, is facing the also undefeated 30-year-old William Silva (23-0, 14 KOs). As great a fighter as Crawford is, Verdejo’s Puerto Rican fans will dominate the crowd at The Garden. But Verdejo fans should know they may be in for a close fight, as Silva dominated his last fight in preparation for this clash.

Saturday, March 5 at 7pm: Julian “J Rock” Williams vs. Marcello Matano: Shobox Special Edition at Sands Events Center, Bethlehem, PA | Buy Tickets

A chance to fight for a championship belt will be on the line in this junior middleweight bout. Williams (21-0-1, 13 KOs), another Philly fighter, would draw a mandatory fight against the very talented 154-lb. champ Jermall Charlo if he can get past the Italian Marcello Matano (16-1, 5 KOs) who has never fought outside of his home country. This fight and two of the undercard bouts will be live on Showtime.

(UPDATED 2-23-2016) Saturday, March 12 at 5:45pm: Fights at Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, CT | TBD

Thurman vs Porter press picThis was going to be a CBS primetime TV matchup between Thurman, the hard-hitting WBA welterweight champion, and Shawn Porter, who has beaten good fighters like Devon Alexander and Adrien Broner the last few years. But with the announcement that Thurman’s car crash has pushed his promoter Lou DiBella to postpone this fight, we will see if the undercard bouts, namely a featherweight matchup between mexicanos Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) and Fernando Montiel (54-5-2, 39 KOs), will be kept intact for a Mohegan Sun fight night aired possibly on Showtime instead of CBS.
